- Why do I have to pay tolls?

The tunnel is tolled primarily to maintain and operate the tunnel as well as providing a return on investment for all parties involved in the PPP scheme.
The tolls are at a moderate level and are governed by the bye-laws to the scheme.
The NRA have ensured that the contracts entered into represent value for money for the public sector and that the revenue sharing arrangement included in the contract is such that DirectRoute will not earn large profits from this scheme.
- How do I pay tolls and how much does it cost?

Payment can be made:
1. by cash in manual lanes to a toll collector (change and receipt given),
2. some lanes are equipped with automatic coin machines and
3. by Limerick Tunnel Trip Card (only usable on the Limerick Tunnel Toll Road) and4. the easiest and fastest way to pay tolls is by electronic payment: Limerick Tunnel Tag.
You can open your account online and pay by credit card. In addition there will be a monthly administration charge and a fully refundable deposit of 20 for the electronic tag.

- How much is the toll for trailers?

Where a trailer is towed by another vehicle, it is treated as one combined vehicle and the class of traffic to which such combined vehicle belongs is determined by the weight and by the number of axles of the vehicle and trailer. In the case of a trailer towed by a Motor Cycle, a Motor Car, a Bus or a Coach the appropriate toll is determined for such vehicle only, disregarding the trailer.
- Can I pay my tolls with cash?

Yes. You can pay your toll with cash on both the Mainline Toll Plaza in Coonagh and the Clonmacken Toll Plaza. Not all toll booths are staffed so be prepared to pay with exact change at automatic coin machines. Automatic coin machines accept 2 EUR 1 EUR, 50 Cent, 20 Cent and 10 Cent coins, but no copper coins.
- Do I need exact change on the Bypass?

At the toll lanes that are manned by a toll attendant, you can pay the toll with coins or notes. When paying at automatic coin machines at the Mainline Toll Plaza (cars only) you will need exact change. Automatic coin machines at the ramp plaza in Clonmacken will be suitable for both cars and trucks and will give change. Once the toll is paid, you will see a green light and the barrier will open that signals you to drive through.
- Can I pay with Credit Card?

We currently do not accept credit cards for payment in the toll lanes . By opening a Limerick Tunnel Account for getting the Limerick Tunnel Tag you can pay by Credit Card.
- What is an Express Lane?

One Express Lane in each direction is located at the Mainline Toll Plaza in Coonagh and is solely reserved for users of the Limerick Tunnel Tag. In these lanes users with a Limerick Tunnel Tag will be able to cruise through the toll plaza without the need to stop
- What happens if I do not pay the toll?

It is an Offence not to pay tolls on the Bypass and the vehicle will not be allowed to use the Limerick Tunnel. In such case a picture of the vehicle is taken and the driver is subject to prosecution.

There is a maximum speed limit of about 100 kph and 80 kph in the tunnel.
